In the fourteenth century, an organized sect of people named the Flagellates roamed through Europe. They were well known for the unusual practice they used to atone for their sins: they would walk through the village with a whip braided with bone chips, chanting prayers and whipping themselves. This is where we get the term “self-flagellation,” which means “extreme criticism of oneself.”

I once heard the expression, “In life we can’t always avoid pain; but misery is a personal choice.” When we make a life decision that reflects our values and sense of personal mission we become responsible for the attitudes we bring to the party.

The attitudes we choose will either create additional stress and fear or it will grow trust, confidence, faith and lead us to more positive action. A negative attitude has the power to make us miserable or stop us in our tracks. When we move forward with the right attitude, we take back the power.

You can save yourself from yourself simply by being conscious of your attitude and embracing a positive one as you move forward!
